I chose to read a topic on the website, fee.org The Freeman, and it's about slavery. The name of the actual article is named Ten Reasons Not to Abolish Slavery. I had to debate with my classmates in my African History class why we should have slavery. Though I don't agree with having slavery, I found the topic rather interesting with some valid points.
The article mentions many reasons why slavery should be permitted is that slavery has existed since Biblical times. It is actually mentioned in the Bible quite a few times. The article also mentions of slavery being natural. There will always be a race superior to another. Slavery exists in every society and has also shaped many societies such as The United States of America, The British, The French , The Egyptians and many more countries. Slavery is also very profitable to businesses because they don't get payed. This means that indentured servants were never really needed. The slaves, if they were released also wouldn't be capable of taking care of themselves since they were brought to a new environment and their knowledge of the land was little to none. In cases such as slaves in the United States, if they were released how could they live? Jobs rarely were offered to the African Americans, they would either die of starvation or resolve their issues to criminality. They weren't seen as equals. In slavery, they were guaranteed a job, food, and shelter, the chances of finding that if they were freed were at a minimum.
My personal reaction to this essay was obviously that I didn't agree with it at all. However, there was some facts to it . This article in my opinion was a very interesting, controversial article because it is still a very touchy situation even though slavery does not exist anymore. I was able to learn a lot though.
